How to level your caravan perfectly
Ben Hackney-Williams, 1st August 2017, Caravan
If your tourer isn't level on site, it could cause problems with your living facilities such as water drainage and fridge functionality. However, fear not because it's all about attention and keeping a level head, to guarantee the perfect level for your caravan.
Start strong
Get this right and it'll only take a little work from here on out.
First things first: manoeuvre your tourer into place with your car or by the grab handles if needed for any final adjustments. Get this right and, most of the time, it'll only take a little work from here on out. Get it wrong and you can forget rest and relaxation, you'll be rolling out of bed.
Face downhill
If you're on a noticeable slope, ensure that the nose of your caravan is facing down the hill, as this will enable you to use the jockey wheel (or even the jockey and blocks in extreme cases) to start you as efficiently as possible when it comes to getting level.
Use the jockey wheel
This is the easiest way to make fast adjustments to your levelling, front and back. Have someone motion through the front window whether you need to wind up or down and you'll be one step closer to comfort with ease.
Don't rely on the corner steadies
So many newbies start their caravanning life by thinking that you wind the corner steadies up or down to do the levelling work alone; this is not the case. The clue's in the name: steadies. Once you've got the tourer level with manoeuvring and the jockey wheel, you wind the corner steadies down to hold everything in place. In extreme cases you can use blocks.
Go old school
While the tried and tested corner steady winder does the job, you can upgrade this by fixing the attachment onto a drill for ease of automation. Some people even fit piping from the nut to the edge of their caravan's bodywork to guide the winder in place.
Use technology
If you're particularly flash, have an automatic leveller system fitted from companies such as the Levelsystem by E&P Hydraulics. At the touch of a button, this will level your tourer using hydraulics fitted underneath your tourer, before automatically setting down the corner steadies. Luxury indeed.
Whether you're doing the task manually or with the assistance of tools and tech, taking time to keep your caravan on the level will ensure your holiday remains fault free, leaving you to concentrate on your own rest and relaxation.
