How to keep your caravan safe from fire

This extinguisher technology will leave you wondering why you ever trusted another option in the past.

So many caravanners neglect the servicing, replacement and care for their fire extinguishers. This is dangerous in any environment, but in a confined space such as a caravan, it takes seconds for bad things to happen. Not only will the technology you're going to read about save lives, it's also light weight and the formula is safe for humans and animals - perfect for safety on site in every way.

You all remember your science education or fire safety training at some point in your life, right? The fire triangle of heat, fuel and oxygen - all the things needed for a fire to ignite. To stop a fire, extinguishers usually concentrate on removing one of these elements with suitable materials dependant on the nature of the fire. However, that's not the only way any more.

The JE range of extinguishers can be used on all liquid, gas and electric fires. Not only are they versatile in tackling any flame, they're also compact, meaning that a handheld extinguisher from Firetool Safety holds the same amount of power as the knee-high classic red water extinguisher you'll find in most office buildings.

So what's the difference?

There are two sides to the incredible innovation within these extinguishers. The first is how the firefighting compound is released. The unit itself is stainless steel, with no need for nozzles, piping or anything else that could corrode and prevent effectiveness over time. An aerosol generator inside the extinguisher produces an ultra-fine agent that can put out fires much more efficiently (10 times, in fact) than anything else on the market, both in terms of speed and volume.

At the press of a button, a charge begins to produce the ultra-fine aerosol that passes through a series of oxidation and cooling filters before escaping through the discharge points of the generator at low pressure.

Putting out the fire itself

As if that's not impressive enough, it's how the fire is extinguished by this aerosol that's really mind blowing. Going back to the fire triangle, these extinguishers don't just remove one element that's causing combustion. The threat is removed by chemical reaction. In the words of Firetool Safety themselves:

"Unlike other agents that work by reducing oxygen levels or by cooling, the aerosol extinguishes by chemical interaction with the free radicals that fuel the growth of the fire - in the same manner as halon did. The aerosol stream contains ultra-fine (1-2 micron) particles of potassium compounds that provide a large surface area interaction with the fire. In the fire zone the free potassium radicals bind with the free radicals of the fire (O, OH, H) to rapidly slow and extinguish the fire."
