A TV made with Caravanners in mind
Chris Hogan, 1st April 2018, Caravan
The Avtex range of televisions has a good reputation amongst caravanners as they're built from the ground up for mobile use. Do they deliver?
Avtex TV's certainly look good and are designed to work with 12V supplies rather than having to rely on adapters and inverters. Having said that, they will also work on 240V AC supplies. The frames are very slim and the newest models feature a frameless design, so the screen goes from edge to edge, making the most of every millimetre of space.
Fully-featured
They are well equipped too - they're HD, most have integral DVD players, will record to a USB stick or external hard drive, and have two tuners for recording one programme while watching another. They'll work with an aerial or a dish and range from 16in to 24in screen sizes.
So far so good, but many other small TVs will have all that too - what makes them better for caravans and campers?
Lightweight and capable
It's obvious, looking at the specs, that these TVs have been designed by people who know their caravans and campers.
Apart from the exceptionally light weight and slim design the latest models have AQT - a one-button tuning aid which makes it easy to re-tune when moving from site to site. The company has invested a lot of time and effort in keeping power consumption as low as possible, and have included an on-screen leisure battery meter.
You can even buy carry cases for them! They have a hard protective outer shell with separate compartments inside to take the leads and other accessories, with room for DVDs and USB sticks.
Good reputation?
There's no doubt that these TVs are more expensive than others that you can pick up on the high street or online, so are they worth the money? A quick look around the forums shows a difference of opinion, with plenty of people happy with picking up a cheap no-brand telly and pocketing the difference.
But, tellingly, the people who think they ARE worth the money are people who have actually bought one. They are fans of the good reception, excellent picture quality and very wide viewing angle, something that's very important where you have people sat around it in a relatively small space.
Owners say the sound of current models is excellent too, with lots of different settings to help you get the best sound in a small space. Some have criticised the sound but the consensus from owners is that those people haven't discovered those extra settings. The support and after-sales service is praised too.
