There's a lot to think about when you're buying your first caravan, whether it's the places you'll take it on holiday or the other bits of kit you need to buy for the perfect touring trip. If you're towing, you need towing mirrors. It's that simple. Drivers must be able to see for a distance of 20 metres to the rear, and four metres either side of their outfit; even if you think you're huge 4x4 car mirrors will do the trick, it's better to know by fitting towing mirrors.

It's important to keep your pride and joy safe both on and off site. The purchase of a wheel clamp and hitchlock will see to that. Keep your tourer and yourself safe on holiday as well with a medical kit and replacement batteries for the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Home comforts

Think about the perfect lazy morning at home. What do you do? Have a cup of tea? You'll need teabags, then. Use this method to ensure you don't get caught out for holiday essentials. Oh, and don't forget the loo roll, either.

You'll need a noseweight gauge to measure the downforce at the front of the tourer, caravan insurance for obvious reasons (it's often overlooked), as well as other things that do what they say on the tin - spirit level, gas bottle, step, battery, torch and a tool kit, for example.

Whether it's as simple as a rug to sunbathe on or chairs for family and friends, ensuring you've got suitable furniture for your holiday needs is essential in good weather. On a similar note, don't forget the BBQ.

Next up are a few accessories that give you fresh and running water for your trip. An Aquaroll is the most popular fresh water tank that's easily transportable for refills, too. On top of that, ask your dealership about a waste water tank to contain what flows down the plughole.
