What are Malware Attacks?

In short, they are a virus that infects your computer so that they can steal your information. This includes bank details, passwords and your personal information. The nastiest attacks will literally take over your computer, and then make you pay a fee to gain access back to your computer.

How do I protect my computer?

Fortunately there are a lot of tools and strategies you can put in place to protect your information.

1. Always have reliable anti-spyware and anti-malware software installed, and make sure to run frequent scans and updates.

2. Be wary of any links that are sent to you in an email. If in doubt, do not click the link. Instead go to the website directly, or contact the individual who sent you the email directly some other way.

Avoid links featured on Facebook and Twitter. They may look like they are coming from your friends, but there's a good chance their account has been compromised and cybercrooks are trying to trick you.

How can I tell if my computer has already been infected?

There are a few common symptoms to look out for:

1. Speed - Has your computer begun running noticeably slower than usual? Does it take a long time to boot up? Does it take longer than usual to load programmes?

2. Pop-ups - Have pop-up adverts begun littering your computer screen?

3. Unusual programmes - Have you started noticing programs starting up automatically that you don't recognise?

4. Messages - Are your friends telling you they have received odd emails from yourself? Either directly or through Facebook?

What do I do if I think my computer has been attacked?

BT have produced this useful guide on what to do should you suspect your PC has been infected. Simply follow the instructions right through to the end.

If you're not very confident using your PC, you should take your laptop into your nearest computer store. PC World and Curry's, offer a Knowhow Service bar, which means you can drop in your computer for a full service.

Alternatively try Which?, and fill in their handy form and someone will get back in touch shortly to help.
