Where there’s a bonfire, there’s a chance for fire to spread. Even the safest, most well-built bonfire can get out of control.

Prepare the area

A slight change in the wind direction can easily fan the flames and turn your small bonfire into a blazing heap, which can quickly spread towards your property. Any nearby sheds, fences, benches or even your house can end up being engulfed by the fire so it’s important to choose the right spot to build your fire AND to have the correct insurance to cover all your property in event of a fire.

You can be fined up to £5,000 and imprisoned for up to 6 months for selling or using fireworks illegally!

Thatched properties need to be especially careful on bonfire night. A back-garden display may cause damage to the roof if a lit firework lands on the thatch. Additionally, any fireworks from the surrounding area can sometimes be carried over by winds. A fire-damaged thatch is likely to be expensive to repair, and the worst case scenario is that the whole roof ends up in flames. It is therefore of utmost importance that your period home is fully insured against fire damage to the thatch.

The perfect Launch Site

Fireworks are unpredictable and can be catapulted through the air at any angle and at high speed. As such, a firework could land almost anywhere and will certainly hit anything in its path. Setting up a safe launch-site is key to getting fireworks to explode where you want them to – in the sky. But even a well set-up display can go wrong, and wayward fireworks can hit cars, guests’ belongings and even your home, so it’s vital that you carry the correct liability insurance in order to fix any damage caused.
