Five easy money saving tips and tricks!

Take a read through our five top tips on how you can save more money...
The boring bit - Checking your account
- Start by getting out your bank statements and combing through your outgoings. Work out what goes out when, and mark it in your diary/calendar to remind you. This way you'll know when in the month you can afford to splurge, and when to be frugal. You may also be surprised by some of the monthly outgoings you have, old subscriptions you forgot to cancel, and how many times you visit the local coffee shop per week!
Have an Emergency savings account
- By separating your savings into two categories 'Savings' and 'Emergencies', you won't feel so bad when the unexpected happens, and you have to dip into your nest egg.
So to start, open a new savings account and call it Emergencies. Then decide what you can afford to put away every month, and set up a standing order for both savings accounts. Then when the boiler breaks, or the car is broken you have a nice lump sum in your Emergencies account you can use to fix the problem. Rather than using the money from your general savings account. BUT you must be strict and only allow yourself to dip into this fund when there really is an emergency.
Grow your own
- Start growing your own vegetables. It is so easy to do, and not only does it save you money, but it also improves your
mental and physical health. Being out in the garden, breathing fresh air, and getting away from the screens that consume modern day life, has a wonderful effect on people. For more information about gardening for better health visit the charity

Get creative in the kitchen
- With takeaways around every corner, and apps that will now deliver restaurant meals straight to our doors, it is very tempting to throw away odd food that's left in the fridge, and go for the latter. However, by throwing out food that could've been used, we are hurting our wallets and the planet.
Instead, when you find yourself staring at an assortment of random ingredients in your fridge, and you pick up your laptop to order a takeaway. STOP! Instead, go to Love Food Hate Waste and see what recipes pop up when you enter the ingredients you have. That way you will be using up what you have and only buying the extra bits you may need to make that meal.
Invoke the 30 Day Rule
-
We are in the age of instant gratification, where we buy things just for the sake of it, rather than because we need it. It means homes are filling up with material items, and as more comes in, we have no choice but to throw more out. What was new 2 months ago, is now being tossed.
To counter this, try using the 30 day rule. If you see something that you want to buy and it is not a necessity, wait 30 days. This way you will be making sure the items you purchase are truly special to you, and in turn you will appreciate them more!
