Nifty - what's it all about?

We've recently been finding ourselves delving more and more into a Facebook page called 'Nifty'. It's a place where people link to article and videos demonstrating useful hints, tips and life hacks. So why is it so compelling?

This Facebook page is full of ideas for things to do - some you'll probably know already, many your won't. Equally some are great ideas while others have you wondering why on earth you would bother - but then that's all part of the fun.

Great ideas

Would you like to make your own perfume that you can carry around easily? No problem - user Top Knot has posted a video showing you how to make solid perfumes; you can even design a scent to please yourself. Much easier for camping and other outdoor excursions than carrying a bottle around.

And we loved the pet selfie helper - a device to get your pet's attention when trying to take a selfie - it plugs into your phone's headphone socket. Works well with dogs, don't expect cats to play ball though!

Environmentally friendly

Many of the articles are about making things that you can easily buy, but the homemade ones are less toxic, safer and kinder to the environment.

How about non-toxic play goo for kids? Who'd have thought it was possible to make your own play goo, let alone one without all the chemicals in the commercial ones.

Or the DIY chemical-free cleaning wipes? This sort of thing is very well received.

Slightly odd

Then there are other ideas - like making your own tea bags out of a coffee filter you cut, wrap and sew up? It seems a lot of trouble, although it could be useful for people who like making their own teas and infusions that you can't buy in shops.

But wouldn't it be easier, cheaper and kinder on the environment to use a diffuser you can reuse each time?

This being on social media, you can be sure that commenters will point these things out. And they did, swiftly followed by people commenting on the commenters and then all hell breaking loose - but in a very gentle way compared to some places on the internet.

Thread theatre

People love to pick holes in the methods too. Take the painted wooden kitchen utensils which look great, but commenters decided to have a pop at the idea being too easy to need a video, for suggesting painting instead of buying coloured ones in the first place, for using the wrong paint, you name it .... if you like to sit back with a cup of tea and read comment threads then this is the page for you!

Popularity

Nifty has obviously hit a chord - many of the videos have over 3-4 million views - put a cat or a dog in and it soars to 15 to 20 million! Even "Make Your Own Shelf Out Of Popsicles" (ice-cream lolly sticks) was watched 12 million times and gathered over 3,500 comments. Unfortunately, for unexplained reasons, the article is no longer on the website, but you can find the video by putting 'popsicles' into the '"Search for posts on this Page' box.

Why not take a look yourself - log on and search for 'Nifty' at the top of the Facebook page or click on the button below - do let us know what you think!
