Christmas is well and truly on its way! At this magical time of year, we start to see houses light up down every street, bursting with different colours and decorations. For those who live or own a boat, you don’t have to miss out on all the fun - we’ve rounded up some of our favourite ideas to help you turn your boat into a winter wonderland.

First things first, let’s cover safety. For obvious reasons, it’s crucial that your Christmas tree, lights or decorations are not blocking the Captain’s view or causing any distractions. You also need to make sure your lights are for outdoor use and determine whether you can use plug-in lights or require battery operated - keeping them away from the water of course! Be careful with how many lights you are using, as you don’t want to overload the power source. Always read safety labels, instructions and manuals and do your research before creating your own masterpiece!

Now onto the fun part…how will you be decorating your boat? Take inspiration from these dazzling displays. You can’t get much more festive than this! Serious skill and lots of patience are needed for this work of art. From a distance you will see Santa and his reindeer sailing into the night, making you forget that there is even a boat there at all!

Keep it simple with traditional fairy lights and create an elegant display that anyone can do. If you want to get into the festive spirit but don’t have the time or skill to dress up your entire boat, strings of classic lights will make your boat sparkle. Stick to a colour scheme for a simple, yet effective look.

More colour, please! Turn it up a notch by using lots of different coloured lights and decorations and illuminate the whole harbour. Just look at that reflection in the water! Coloured lights have the ability to make any boat look Christmassy, no matter how small or large.

Why not use your favourite Christmas film as the theme? Carefully arranged lights will have festive characters glowing, or for an easy option - use inflatable decorations! Onlookers will love seeing your displays just as much as you enjoyed making them.

Turn your boat into a giant Christmas tree by cleverly using the mast as your focal point. Drapes of green lighting will create the main shape, then use your imagination to decorate it. Festoon lighting is the perfect substitute for baubles - don’t forget a star for the top!
