Top Seven: Most expensive boats in the world!
Chris Hogan, 14th December 2018, Boat
Everyone knows that running a boat can be costly but if you have could afford one of these, you wouldn't have to worry about running costs. Here's a list of the seven most expensive superyachts in the world right now.
ECLIPSE: $1.5 BILLION
Eclipse is owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. The exact cost isn't known but estimates vary between $800,000 to $1.5bn, so it comfortably tops this list. Like many superyachts it was built by Blohm and Voss, to a design by Terence Disdale.
The ship boast two helipads, presumably just in case one is already in use, and has 24 guest cabins, two swimming pools, and a mini-submarine for exploring! For enhanced security there is a missile detection system, armour plating and bulletproof windows on the master bedroom and bridge, and an anti-paparazzi shield created by lasers sweeping the area.
AZZAM: $600 MILLION
Azzam is rumoured to be owned by a member of the UAE royal family and was a complex and challenging build. At 590ft it's world's longest private yacht but the two gas turbines and two diesel engines make it surprisingly fast, with a top speed of 30 knots. The sophisticated interior was designed by Christophe Leoni and the exterior by Nauta Yacht.
MOTOR YACHT A: $440 MILLION (or $323)
There's some doubt as to the actual cost of this bizarre-looking 'stealth' yacht, so in some lists it appears as No 6, behind the Dubai. Built in 2006, the design is down to maverick designer Phillippe Starck - explanation in itself.
It's not vast, like most of the yachts on this list; accommodation houses 42 crew members serving 14 guests. It's owned by a Russian tycoon and was built by Blohm and Voss in Kiel.
DUBAI: $400 MILLION
Yet another extravagant yacht built by Blohm and Voss, the Dubai is believed to be the property of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, although it was originally started in 1996 for Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei. The Dubai is just under 60ft shorter than the Azzam, was designed by London-based Andrew Winch with the interior by Platinum Yachts and accommodates 155 guests and crew.
AL SAID: $300 MILLION
Al Said is owned by the Sultan Qaboos of Oman and is believed to have the second-highest displacement of any superyacht, second only to the Dilbar (see below). The concert hall can host a 50-piece orchestra, just right for entertaining the 70 guests, while 154 crew members look after them.
DILBAR: $256 MILLION
The Dilbar is named after the mother of its owner, Russian Alisher Usmanov and is the world's largest yacht by displacement. First built by Lürssen Yachts in 2008 , it was delivered to Usmanov in 2016 and he apparently uses it to travel between his private islands. The Dilbar even has a custom-built seven-seater Airbus H175 helicopter on board.
AL MIRQAB: $250 MILLION
The Al Mirqab belongs to Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, former Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. Designed by Tim Heywood with interior by Andrew Winch, it was built by Peters Schiffbau Wewelsfleth of Germany. Completed in 2008 there are ten suites, each with its own lounge, hosting up to 24 guests with two VIP rooms for the owner 55 rooms for crew. The yacht spends most of its time off the coast near Athens.
