5 ways to save money on your car insurance

There's a lot of competition for your car or van insurance and trying to get the best deal every year can be a pain. Building on our experience with Insure My Vehicle here are the top five ways you can get top value insurance.

1. Shop around

Of course. It's the number one way of saving money, but be careful with comparison sites as they don't check all the providers. Insure My Vehicle isn't on comparison sites and neither are Direct Line or Aviva (previously Norwich Union).

Always make sure you're comparing like with like though. You might find that one policy is a lot cheaper than others but has a lower level of benefits. So read policy details carefully to make sure your bargain really is a bargain.

2. Keep your car standard

Any changes to your car from the standard must be notified to your insurer, whether you did them or they had been done to the car already. Changing a radio, for example, isn't likely to affect your premium but flash wheels, spoilers and the like may well do, changing the suspension and modifying the ECU ('chipping') almost certainly will.

The exception to this is security devices - they may well result in a lower premium as the risk of theft is lowered.

3. Add a lower risk driver

Even if they won't be using the car a great deal you can add a second driver to a policy. If they have a good driving record and high no claims bonus the premium may drop because the joint risk is lower.

Note that you must NOT add that driver as the main driver unless they really will be the main driver - to do so is fraudulent and claims will be contested, the policy may even be invalidated.

4. Third party might not be cheapest

Bizarrely, lower levels of cover like Third Party only, or TP Fire & Theft, are often more expensive than fully comprehensive policies.

This is because insurers may assume that someone looking for TP or TPF&T will be a higher risk than someone looking for comprehensive. So try all the different levels before making your decision.

5. Challenge your renewal quote

You should never just accept what you're offered for the next year, at best shop around to find a better deal and at least ring your existing insurer and ask for a discount.

We'd be very happy to take on the renewal challenge for you - just call 01608 648421 or go to Insure My Vehicle

Take your time

Whether you insure with us or not, do your research when finding the right car or van insurance. It takes time to check out all the options so don't leave it too late and end up taking the wrong option in haste.
